Lapis Lazuli
Lapis dealers in the Namak Mandi (salt bazar) in Peshawar
Lapis or more correctly Lapis Lazuli is a rock type, containing primarily Lazurite, Calcite and Pyrite
Lapis Lazuli has been found in other places, but most of today’s production comes from the mines at Sar e Sang. Almost all of the production is smuggled across the border into Pakistan and end up in the Peshawar Namak Mandi (Salt Bazaar) and though some of it gets shortstopped by local lapidaries, most of it is exported as rough to China. The local lapidaries get first crack at the rough and they are the ones we deal with to get the lapidary items that we sell. This locality has been producing Lapis Lazuli for more than 100 years. The Lazurite is the mineral that makes the stone the rich blue color that makes this material popular. Some have little flecks or veins of white in them and this is the calcite. Some also have little sparkles of gold colored pyrite in it as well. In some past times, real Lapis was so rare and hard to get that synthetic lapis was simulated by blue glass and little flecks of gold were added to simulate the pyrite inclusions.

Aqua Aura Quartz

Aqua Aura Quartz are natural quartz crystals that have had a coating of tin with a little bit of gold vapor deposited on their surface to make them a pretty blue aquamarine color. The coating is quite resistant to wear and we have never had a single complaint about the coating wearing off. The process is time intensive and costs us more than the cost of the quartz crystals that we send to be coated. The process is also rather heat intensive and many of the quartz clusters we send for treatment crack apart during the coating process from the thermal stress they are subjected to and we always get some bits and pieces back from the clusters that have fallen apart. We have also found out from long experience that we need to use quartz crystals of high quality. They need to be bright and shiny to start with and have good transparency. If we don't use this kind of quartz, the breakage during treatment goes up and the results are less satisfactory if we use inferior quality quartz. Often times we have trouble keeping enough in stock to satisfy customers and part of this is that it is sometimes difficult to get the kind and quality of quartz that we need for the process.

Fluorite Bowls

Green and Purple banded fluorite bowls. Many of these are quite striking and we sell a lot of them. We get in shipments of these periodically and our most recent shipment included some of the largest and finest fluorite bowls we have ever had. Some of these are festooned with flower carvings on their rims, all from the same piece of fluorite. In the 19th century in England, the base metal mines of Cornwall produced large quantities of massive fluorite and though it had no value to the mining companies for lead or zinc values, local craftsmen learned how to work it into a variety of objects that found a ready market. These items were made from fluorite and it was called blue john and today not many of these items survive and those that do are cherished as antiques. The Chinese base metals, located predominately in Hunan Province, China, also produce a lot of fluorite and the craftsmen in China work this fluorite up into many different forms. We believe the quality of the fluorite they use is superior to that produced by the English mines.
Banded Obsidian or Midnight Lace Obsidian
This material is a natural occurring volcanic glass from the Caucasus Mountains in Russia. It is not easy to export mineral items from Russia, and after you get the material out you then have to have it made into things and in the case of these items it has been made into various items like cabs, donuts etc. The secret of this material is that it must be cut into thin items so that you can see the attractive black banding with the clear obsidian between the black bands. This material is new on the market and we don't know yet what the new age community will say about it or what special magical powers they will tell us it has. This far we have:
